Charles W. Flexner, M.D., is Professor of Medicine in the Divisions of Clinical Pharmacology and Infectious Diseases, and Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is also Professor in the Department of International Health in the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Flexner is Associate Vice-Chair for Academic Fellowship Programs in the Department of Medicine, Associate Director of the Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and School of Public Health, and is Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins General Clinical Research Center (GCRC), where he directs the Outpatient GCRC Clinic. Dr. Flexner currently serves as the Principal Investigator for the Johns Hopkins AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) supported by the NIH. He was Chair of the National ACTG Pharmacology Committee from 1993-1995. He serves on the editorial boards of six scientific journals, and was Vice-President and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He was elected President of the American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR) in 1999, and served as President of the AFMR Foundation until 2002. In this capacity he helped to found the annual conjoint Clinical Research meetings that bring together six organizations with an interest in human subjects research. He has served as a consultant on drug development and regulation to the Food and Drug Administration and to the United States House of Representatives. His current research focuses on the basic and clinical pharmacology of drugs for AIDS.
