Cellular Mechanisms for Sarcopenia in the Elderly

The objective of this project is to investigate the hypothesis that sarcopenia in the elderly results from both a reduction in the basal rate of muscle protein synthesis and a resistance to trophic hormones such as IGF-I caused by chronic inflammation and the mechanism for both reduced basal muscle protein synthesis and increased resistance to anabolic hormones is reduced intracellular insulin/IGF-I signaling.
